Event Introduction:
Leading Chromatic Harmonica Virtuoso and the 2nd Taichung Youth Harmonica Orchestra Annual Concert
Music is a universal language that transcends words and cultures—it moves the soul, stirs emotions, and brings people closer together. On Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at 7:30 PM, Taichung’s Chung Shan Hall will host a vibrant musical celebration full of youthful energy and harmonic beauty: Leading Chromatic Harmonica Virtuoso and the 2nd Annual Concert of the Taichung Youth Harmonica Orchestra. On this special evening, outstanding young musicians from the Taichung area will come together to present a rich audiovisual feast filled with musical passion, stories of growth, and the magic of melody.
This concert is organized by the Taichung Harmonica Association, with conductor Mr. Tsai Cheng-Chia leading the youth harmonica ensemble through a series of captivating musical pieces. One of the evening’s highlights will be a solo performance by chromatic harmonica virtuoso Lin Chia-Ching, whose remarkable skill and expressive playing will showcase the harmonica’s unique charm and emotional depth.
A Journey of Musical Exploration and Discovery
The concert program features a diverse and creative selection of works, offering the audience a glimpse into the limitless possibilities of music. The first half will include classical and contemporary masterpieces such as Johann Strauss’s Overture to Die Fledermaus, the third movement of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto (reimagined for chromatic harmonica), and Windows of the World by contemporary composer Peter Graham. These pieces not only highlight the harmonica’s refined expression in classical music but also explore its innovative potential in modern compositions.
Strauss’s Die Fledermaus overture, a lively and glamorous orchestral favorite, will take on new life through harmonica performance, offering a fresh and textured listening experience. Following this, Tchaikovsky’s passionate third movement—originally written for violin—will be reinterpreted on the harmonica, adding a new emotional dimension. Audiences will witness how harmonica players navigate the intricate emotions of this beloved work, transforming its depth into a new musical language.
Peter Graham’s Windows of the World is a rhythmically dynamic and vividly modern piece. When played on the harmonica, it unfolds as a colorful musical panorama, inviting listeners into a world brimming with energy and discovery. Each note acts like a window, revealing diverse musical elements and emotional hues.
Achievements and Challenges: A Journey of Growth
The second half of the concert delves deeper into emotional expression with even more moving works. Rossano Galante’s Cry of the Last Unicorn is a poignant and beautiful piece inspired by the tale of the same name. It conveys themes of loneliness and longing. The performers will channel these emotions through the harmonica’s unique timbre, guiding the audience into a dreamlike yet melancholic realm.
In contrast, Danzón No. 2 is an exuberant and rhythmically rich composition that will transport the audience to a grand and lively ballroom. This piece showcases another side of the harmonica—its powerful expressiveness and emotional intensity—igniting sparks of youthful energy and musical passion in every listener.
Leading Chromatic Harmonica Virtuoso and the 2nd Taichung Youth Harmonica Orchestra Concert is more than just a musical performance—it is a stage for dreams and a celebration of dedication. The young musicians, through their masterful harmonica skills, not only share their love for music but also reflect their heartfelt journey of growth and aspiration.
For the audience, this is an emotionally resonant musical experience. We sincerely invite you to join us for this warm and hopeful evening—come feel the magic of the harmonica and witness the most genuine voices of youth.
